Napoli-Torino, the history: balance clearly in favor of the Azzurri

I precedenti di Napoli-Torino in Serie A: solamente 8 vittorie in 70 partite per gli azzurri allo Stadio Maradona

Napoli-Torino is a challenge with a historical flavor. Scudetti, triumphs, relegations and failures: the two teams, among the most glorious in the entire league, for many years – before the recent Azzurri boom – went hand in hand. It is no coincidence that Napoli is among the teams most often faced by the Granata in Serie A, with as many as 70 previous matches played in Campania. These have brought only 8 victories for Toro, while at the same time came 30 defeats and 32 draws. 63 goals have been scored by the granata (less than one per game on average), while the Campani have scored 105.

L’ultimo precedente: il pareggio dello scorso anno

The last match between Napoli and Torino played at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium was on March 8, 2024. On that occasion, the Azzurri were coached by Calzona, the third coach of the season, while Paro sat on the Granata bench due to Juric’s disqualification. The match ended 1-1: Kvataskhelia’s lead was answered by Sanabria with a super reverse, which allowed his team to come out of a difficult field with a point.

Il successo manca dal 2009

Sixteen very long years, that’s the number of years that even now separate Torino’s last away success against Napoli. And it must also be said that that one was not exactly a good omen. Two days before the end of the championship, Camolese’s team in fact obtained the first away success of the entire season, which was not enough, however, to avoid relegation a few days later.

Il poker di Mertens

Away trips to Naples have often not left a smile on their faces, and a perfect example is the Dec. 18 match in 2016. That night the Toro found themselves facing a Martian in the guise of Dries Mertens, capable of scoring four goals and making himself more than decisive in the 5-3 final that gave the Azzurri the three points before Christmas.
