Mercato d’inverno flop: Salah-Eddine e Gourna-Douath già fuori dal progetto
An investment of more than 30 million that risks vanishing in a handful of appearances. This is, at the moment, the balance sheet of Roma’s latest winter market, with Claudio Ranieri essentially flunking the new arrivals. This is underlined by Corriere dello Sport, which does the math: in total, the new signings have put together just 1,066 minutes on the field.
Deyne Rensch is the only one who has given a real technical signal: 549 minutes, a muscle injury in between, and a race to regain ground in the hierarchies, now led by Saelemaekers and Celik. But he remains a sound investment: picked up by Ajax just months before his contract expires, class of 2003, he will still have room to grow.
Much more disappointing was the parable of the others. Salah-Eddine, paid 10 million, and Lucas Gourna-Douath, who arrived on loan with the right of redemption at 18 million, have together racked up three Serie A appearances, including only two as starters. Ranieri also tried them as a pair in Parma, but the test did not leave a mark. They do not seem technically unproven, but they never really convinced the coach, who preferred to focus on those he knew best.
The fate of the two is already mapped out: Salah-Eddine could be sold in the summer, while Gourna-Douath will return to Austria at the end of his loan. Their use between now and the end of the season will be kept to a minimum.
Viktor Nelsson, borrowed on loan from Galatasaray, also experienced an anonymous season: only one appearance as a starter (at Empoli), then injury and exclusion in the last call-ups. He will return to Turkey at the end of the season, leaving no significant traces. Only possible “survivor”? Pierluigi Gollini, never on the field so far, but still in Roma’s orbit as deputy Svilar for next season.
