Roma bench, announcement nears: now it’s up to the Friedkins to choose the future

AS ROMA NEWS – Claudio Ranieri has pulled off yet another miracle. Called up this season after the consecutive exonerations of Daniele De Rossi and Ivan Juric, he restored an identity to the team and put it back in the running for a Champions League spot. But at 73, the Testaccino coach has made up his mind: in June he will stop for good.

No renewal, no extra adventures. He will hang up his tunic, as Ranieri himself announced confidentially to the club’s top brass. The future of the Roma bench is now a blank page to be written, and the pen will be in the Friedkins’ hands. Or perhaps Claudio himself, who will join the club in an advisory role and have a say in the choice of the new coach.

Casting has already begun and names are circulating at a relentless pace. On the table are established coaches, experienced profiles, but also a few exotic names that the American ownership really likes. The most popular ones? Massimiliano Allegri and Maurizio Sarri, both currently free after their experiences with Juventus and Lazio. Two high-profile coaches but also two strong identities, difficult to manage if not accompanied by a shared vision.

Watch also for Stefano Pioli, now at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia on a 12 million contract: difficult to release, but not impossible in case of strong will.
Vincenzo Montella, now Turkey’s technical commissioner, is another name on the notebook: a young profile, offensive ideas and a past as a Roma player, but patience and a good dose of betting would be needed.

Then there is the dreaming suggestion: Carlo Ancelotti. At the end of his run with Real Madrid, courted by Brazil, but still without an official agreement. A return to the capital, where it all began, would have an epic flavor, although the costs would be top world class.

And finally, the “surprise” option: a foreign name, perhaps little known, but with an international resume. It is a track that the Friedkins do not rule out, fascinated by the possibility of building a new technical project à la Arteta or Xabi Alonso, to name a few.

The choice of coach will deeply affect the technical project. A big name like Allegri or Ancelotti would require guarantees and immediate investment, with a star market and stated goals. An up-and-coming coach like Montella or a yet-to-be-discovered foreign profile would instead focus on a gradual path of growth, with young people to enhance and a more sustainable Roma, in line with Ghisolfi’s ambitions. Technicians such as Sarri and Pioli would represent a middle choice: experience, clear ideas, and a fundamental demand – a serious, credible project with clear ambitions, but without demanding Hollywood hits on the market.

As the French DS himself confessed, we will have to wait two or three more weeks to know who will be the chosen one. That will be the first, real signing of the new Roma project. A signing that will say a lot about the Giallorossi’s future, between dreams, reality and an inevitable crossroads: build while waiting for the new stadium or try to win now.
