AS ROMA NEWS – Despite the arrival of April, archaeological excavations for Roma’s new stadium at Pietralata remain at a standstill. After an initial green light obtained in recent days, new bureaucratic delays have further delayed the start of operations. At the center of the issue is an environmental investigation into the possible presence of a wooded area of about two hectares, which is preventing the club from proceeding with drilling until the verifications are completed.
Scavi bloccati: la nuova richiesta del Campidoglio
The matter became complicated on March 7, when Roma submitted a formal request for permission to cut down trees and shrubs, necessary for the conduct of archaeological investigations. The Campidoglio’s response, however, is a compromise: green light for excavations, but only in areas without tree elements. In fact, a permit that prevents proceeding in most of the affected land.
Making the situation even more intricate is a document dated March 19, in which the municipality states that excavations can only begin after the conclusion of the reconnaissance to determine whether the area is actually an urban forest. This information contradicts what has been claimed for a year by the same institutions, which had always ruled out the presence of a wooded area in Pietralata.
L’iter per l’avvio dei lavori: Roma e Comune rassicurano
Despite these obstacles, yesterday evening AS Roma and Roma Capitale issued a joint note to clarify the situation: “With reference to the planned restart of the archaeological investigations preparatory to the construction of the Stadium, Roma Capitale and A.S. Roma announce that a joint definition of the planning of the operations to be implemented starting from the next few days is underway, therefore without any kind of delay with respect to what was announced, with the constant support of a team of archaeologists and agronomic technicians in strict compliance with the regulations in force.”
However, the reality of the situation tells a very different story. After continuous postponements in recent months-initially to February, then to March 10, and again beyond that-to date there is no certain date for the resumption of operations.
Si può costruire in un’area boscata?
Under current regulations, however, it is still possible to build even in the presence of a forest, provided that the intervention has been authorized in advance as a work of significant public interest. In addition, any transformation of the forested area must be economically compensated by Roma, an aspect already included in the preliminary project approved by the municipality.
The knot thus remains bureaucratic and political. While the public interest has already been recognized, the affair of the alleged urban forest continues to slow down a process that, on paper, should have resumed weeks ago. Roma awaits a definitive answer, while fans remain waiting to finally see the first concrete step toward the new stadium.
