Milan, bye-bye Theo Hernandez: there is already a replacement

When a cycle ends, it takes the courage to look ahead. Milan prepares to turn over a new leaf, with a new idea for the left flank

In soccer, as in life, there are relationships that seem destined to last forever. Then, out of the blue, you realize that something has cracked. It doesn’t happen suddenly, but a little bit at a time. An unspoken word, a lost look, one less run. And that spark that once lit up the stadium now struggles to even reach the edge of the box.

The case of Theo Hernandez and Milan looks awfully like one of those stories there. An overwhelming passion, full of promise and knockout performances, but which today seems tired, worn out, ready to lower the curtain.

When Sergio Conceiçao arrived, there was a moment when it seemed that something had changed. Theo was running, pushing, taking the wing as if he had never left it. For a moment, the ghosts of the last few seasons had dissolved. But it was short-lived. The time of half an illusion.

Because at the first real difficulty, Milan sat down. And Theo with him. This is nothing new: when the going gets tough, he often eclipses. It has happened too many times to think it is just a coincidence. And that is why people in the Rossoneri’s house have begun to look elsewhere, without too many regrets.

Milan, addio Theo: tre nomi per prendere la sua eredità

Theo’s contract expires in 2026. Renewal? Not forthcoming. Neither from him nor from the club. A silent distance that already says it all. In June the separation will be consummated, and Milan will take home some 30 million, if it goes well. It will not be a mind-boggling treasure, but enough to plant new seeds.

The question, inevitable, is one: who will be the new master of the left lane? Because one thing is certain: a credible alternative must be found, someone who will not make Theo’s – alternating current – energy too much regretted.

The first name whispered around Via Aldo Rossi is not exactly an unknown. But it comes in stages, because there is a question of how much they will want to invest. If the idea is to put the same amount of money collected for the Frenchman into the pot right away, then eyes on Nuno Tavares.

Lazio’s Portuguese is one of those divisive players: flair to spare, head to decipher. But he has leg, 25 years old, and the right physique to get up and down the flank without batting an eye. Cost? Roughly around 30 million, not one less.

Then there is the more cautious but no less interesting track: Juan Miranda. Having arrived at Bologna on a zero-parameter basis, he has taken the wing with the naturalness of one who needs no introduction. Neat, intelligent, effective. Without too many frills. And with a price that, for Milan, would be decidedly more digestible. Bologna has no intention of giving him away, but for about 20 million a table could be opened.

There is, however, a third name who has already quietly surpassed everyone. And it could be him, in the end, who will wear the Rossoneri 19. Maxim De Cuyper, Belgian from Bruges, one of those profiles that convince you without screaming. A left-footed full-back, just turned 24, one Champions played as a star player and a valuation around 20-25 million. Watch out, however, for competition as well.

Milan has been following him for months. Open contacts, first dialogues, concrete interest. Because De Cuyper has that thing there that those who think in perspective like so much: huge margins of growth, good head, and no fear of taking responsibility. He could come even if Theo were to stay (though that’s a long shot), perhaps to flank him. But it is easier to imagine him ready to take the wing all to himself.
