Incredible confession nearly 30 years later: former Napoli coach regrets accepting Azzurri job
For some the experience at Napoli remains indelible, for others it is simply forgettable. The environment, the city, the electric atmosphere that one experiences every day is not enough. When something doesn’t work, it’s hard not to get carried away by the negative vibes that surround the surrounding space.
So, it also happened to Massimiliano Allegri’s mentor, who returned to speak to Corriere dello Sport about his career. Giovanni Galeone was a promising footballer, when he won the European Juniores with several youngsters who would later become real professionals. And later, he became a good coach, even followed with some interest by Diego Armando Maradona.
Allegri e il no al PSG: parla Galeone
In his interview with Ivan Zazzaroni in Corriere dello Sport, Galeone spends very good words on Massimiliano Allegri, confiding that the coach recently turned down several job offers. Important ones, too:
“The sheikh of PSG phoned him begging him to go to Paris. Max was supposed to raise Thiago Motta who was coaching the youth team. I told him to go, he would win everything.”

But Allegri decided not to take the advice of his former coach and now old friend. In fact, it would appear that the coach from Livorno does not like French soccer. Moreover, according to Galeone’s account, Allegri also turned down Arsenal, Manchester United and Real Madrid before accepting a return to Juventus.
Galeone e il rimpianto Napoli
Giovanni Galeone’s coaching career also includes a past at Napoli, lasting a few months between 1997 and 1998. One of the blue club’s most difficult moments, when post-Maradona a decline began that culminated in bankruptcy.

“I was wrong to go to Naples where Diego wanted me, Moggi told me. Mazzone had not been sent away, but he had resigned. And when Mazzone resigns, it means there is no one else who can do better. At that time Viola wanted me at Roma.”
Galeone ended his experience in the Azzurri after about ten league games, never managing to win. In his place came Montefusco, who in any case failed to save Napoli, by then in free fall. That season, the partenopei relegated to Serie B.
