Double major coup: here’s the Milan of Fabregas

How Cesc Fabregas would play AC Milan: with the Spaniard one should not repeat the same mistake made with Fonseca

Sergio Conceicao still has some chances for confirmation: everything comes down to fourth place in the standings and the Coppa Italia, but reaching these two goals may not be enough. Milan, after a disastrous season with all the wrong choices, has a reconstruction in mind. That also passes through the arrival of a sporting director, a figure missing since Frederic Massara’s farewell and absolutely necessary for a serious and high-level technical project. The choice is in the hands of Giorgio Furlani and in pole is Fabio Paratici, the former Juventus man seeking revenge after his disqualification for the capital gains case.

With a new sporting director, who we hope will be impactful in his choices, the arrival of a new coach is also expected, so as to start from scratch with a new course. After there has been talk of Massimiliano Allegri for weeks, the name of Cesc Fabregas has been gaining momentum for the past few days: the Spaniard is doing a great job at Como and seems ready to make the leap to a big one. But how would Milan play with Fabregas as coach? Who would stay and who would have to be replaced?

Il Milan di Fabregas, come giocherebbe: chi resta e chi va via

Let us start with an important premise: Fabregas is a coach who deserves the attention of a club like Milan but it is necessary, if not essential, to avoid the same mistake made last summer with Paulo Fonseca. Choosing the coach is not enough: it is necessary to back him and support him with an agreed market, with purchases (and disposals) that are in line with his idea of soccer.

Last summer Milan went from Pioli to Fonseca, that is, from the sun to the moon, confirming much of the squad built for the previous coach: it is true that coaches can sometimes work miracles, but up to a certain point. And Fabregas’ ideas, by the way, are not that far from Fonseca’s: the idea of positional soccer, perhaps a little less dogmatic, is also very strong in the Spaniard. Inevitable for someone born and raised in Barcelona, the home of positional soccer, and in the Spanish national team.

His soccer requires quality, right from the central defenders, for a clean and reasoned construction: Malick Thiaw and Matteo Gabbia are the only defenders currently on the roster with these characteristics. Kyle Walker as a full-back is perfect (son of Pep Guardiola, used to this kind of soccer).

Without a shadow of a doubt, Milan needs a central player of depth, quality and experience. And who is, above all, skilful with the ball. Como often uses a structure with 4 plus 2 in phase 1: the two-man midfield, with Fofana and Reijnders, among the best during Fonseca’s management, could be a good base, but it would be even better with the acquisition of Samuele Ricci alongside the Frenchman and with the Dutchman a few meters further forward on the forward line. Pulisic, Leao and Gimenez is the trident from which to start.
