AS ROMA NEWS – The only certainty is that Paulo Dybala’s season is over with nine games left to play. Nine finals that will weigh on Roma’s fate, determining not only their placement in the standings, but also the budget for next season and the future of several players. And the names in the balance are many: Soulé, Baldanzi, Pellegrini, Dovbyk and Shomurodov.
Soulé, taken in the summer with the idea of being Dybala’s natural heir, experienced a complicated season. He had to fit into a different system of play, but the Joya stayed and the 4-3-3 was never abandoned. Result? A long period of adaptation, with few rings: a useless goal against Verona and two decisive goals to bring home heavy points against Parma and Empoli. Too little for a bet that should have exploded.
Baldanzi has been used sparingly. He has scored only two goals (one at Udinese in the league and one at Samp in the Coppa Italia), but Ranieri appreciates him more for his interdiction work than for offensive plays. He could be tried as a pure trequartista behind a more physical pair like Dovbyk and Shomurodov, but so far this solution has never been tested.
The one who has disappointed the most is Pellegrini. After scoring in the derby on January 5, he found the net only in the Europa League against Sporting Braga and on a penalty kick in Udine. Little, very little, for the Roma captain. Yet, of all of them, he remains the one with the best profile to play as a trequartista. Dovbyk, who arrived with very high expectations, has scored 15 goals between the league, Europa League and Coppa Italia. Positive numbers, but without ever giving the impression of being a leader. Should he disappoint in the last nine games, Roma may really wonder if they can afford a center forward who is not an absolute standout.
Shomurodov, on the other hand, has experienced a two-sided season: sent on loan to Venezia in January, then stayed on and became the hero of the night against Athletic Bilbao. So far he has scored five goals, but now he is called upon to make the leap. With Dybala out of the picture, these last nine games become a crossroads for everyone: who will be up to the task of earning a place in the Roma of the future?
