AS ROMA NEWS – Guido Fienga, Roma’s former CEO and current advisor to the Saudi fund PIF, gave an interview to Corriere dello Sport at the Festival of Law and Economics, and among other topics he returned to talk about the old Giallorossi stadium project. Here are his statements.
A billion down the drain for the failure to build Roma’s stadium.
“The Italian infrastructure problem is central, and soccer is one of its most illustrious victims, although, alas, the real victim is Italy. We think we are in the vanguard when we announce the inauguration of infrastructures in Rome, whose latest works such as the Nuvola and the Auditorium Parco della Musica, however, took 20 years to be built and we should be ashamed because it took 20 years. In other parts of the world, 24 to 36 months pass between idea and inauguration. For us, it is more important to control than to build. Soccer is one of the most illustrious victims of this situation. This is said by someone who spent eight years for the construction of Roma’s new stadium to become a reality, totally financed by foreign private individuals who would bring capital to our country.
Instead of being favored or redirected-because no one wanted to spite the city and, if there were problems, they could be addressed-the project was fought almost like a religious war. So, in the end, those who were happy because the stadium did not get done should be happy that a billion dollars was not invested in our city; no jobs were created; and their team continues to be penalized by playing in a facility like you might play in a padel court, paying rent for every game you play.”
Infrastructure in Saudi Arabia.
“The last stadium that was inaugurated here in Riyadh, where Al-Nassr’s opponent Al-Nassr plays, was built in 18 months, as much as the upcoming projects on the subject. Twenty-four months elapse between design and construction. This is how the world moves. Now, to all those in Italy who talk about stadiums with ifs, buts, maybes, I say the world moves another way. If we want to stay behind, we are succeeding very well. If we want to wake up, we have to put the goal before the ifs, the buts, the bureaucracy. Otherwise, the same way I went out of our country, you will also go out, young people will go out. And those who are happy with bureaucracy will eventually be left alone.”
Ci racconti l’approccio con i compagni in prima squadra?
“Ero timido, sono così di mio, ero l’ultimo arrivato. Avevo un po’ paura a muovermi per non sembrare di troppo. Mi ha aiutato molto Edoardo Bove; non ci conoscevamo prima, ma veniva dal settore giovanile come me e mi dava consigli su cosa fare e come comportarmi, è stato fondamentale”.
Come hai vissuto la sua vicenda?
“Stavo guardando la partita, mi sono spaventato molto. Ho temuto per la sua vita. Se ci sentiamo? Ogni tanto, ma non lo tempesto di messaggi su visite mediche o altro. Al di là del regolamento, che ovviamente va rispettato, è un peccato per il calcio italiano perdere un giocatore come lui. Ci metteva passione, ci metteva tutto. Grande persona e grande calciatore”.
Adesso come va con i “grandi”?
“Meglio, sono entrato bene nel gruppo. Quando stiamo insieme ci divertiamo e anche questo è un piccolo segreto per far andare bene le cose. Sono tutti simpatici, Mancini fa molto ridere e mi trovo molto bene con Baldanzi”.
Dybala com’è?
“In campo, lo vedete tutti. Fuori è ancora meglio, è un campione che aiuta tutti e ha sempre una parola buona. Se ne potrebbe fregare, invece è un esempio in tutto quello che fa”.
Dei nuovi chi ti impressiona di più?
“Sono tutti grandi giocatori, ottimi acquisti. Forse non pensavo che Saelemaekers fosse così forte”.
Hai da poco firmato il rinnovo: 2029.
“Sono molto contento, ma devo continuare a migliorarmi e dimostrare che la società ha fatto la scelta giusta”.
Oggi esiste ancora possibilità di rimanere con lo stesso club per tutta la vita?
“Penso di sì, ma le cose vanno meritate, la Roma va meritata. Spesso poi la scelta non è del giocatore, bisogna essere tutti d’accordo, bisogna dimostrare il proprio valore tutti i giorni sul campo. Se uno rende e vuole rimanere in un posto e la società è felice, certo che si può fare”.
La tua caratteristica migliore?
“Mi riconoscono di essere un bravo ragazzo e un grande lavoratore. E che tengo tanto alla Roma”.
Si vede anche in campo. Da tifoso come si affronta il derby?
“È qualcosa di incredibile, hai un’adrenalina clamorosa. Quest’anno l’ho giocato per la prima volta, la passione che ti trasmettono i tifosi è fuori dal comune. Sono unici, il loro appoggio è continuato con tutti gli allenatori, i giocatori, la loro lealtà verso la squadra è speciale, non la trovi altrove”.
Tra dieci anni come ti immagini?
“Spero felice, un giocatore migliore, con qualche trofeo magari. E soprattutto spero di restare una persona umile, buona, che si comporta bene con gli altri”.
