Roma, revolution in defense: goodbye Hummels, trio of aces in crosshairs

Roma is ready for a revolution in defense ahead of next season: Hummels will say goodbye, three talents in the crosshairs

Roma, rivoluzione in difesa: addio Hummels, tris d’assi nel mirino – SerieAnews

Roma is fresh off seven consecutive league wins, a string that has ignited fans’ hopes for a Champions League spot. With 49 points in the standings, Ranieri’s team is only four points away from fourth place, a goal that remains within reach. But while the present is getting more and more interesting, the Giallorossi management is already working on the future, and one of the areas on which they will focus most will be the defense.

La situazione di Mats Hummels: ecco perché saluterà

One chapter that will surely mark the Roma market is the situation of Mats Hummels, who arrived on a zero-parameter basis last September. The German center-back set foot in the capital with the intention of lending a hand to the defense, but his stay at Roma is now set to last only one season.

Driving the player to leave the team is his distance from his family, with his son living in Germany and the defender no longer able to reconcile professional and family life. The decision now seems to be made, and Hummels recently stated, “The future? Things with Ranieri are going well, we’ll see….” At the moment, there are no ongoing negotiations for a contract renewal, and a farewell at the end of the season seems increasingly likely.

Meanwhile, Roma is also preparing to say goodbye to Hermoso, the defender who, after his time on loan at Bayer Leverkusen, will return to base because he will not be redeemed. With these changes in the defense, the team will necessarily have to look for new reinforcements to strengthen the department and continue to aim for ambitious goals, such as Champions League qualification.

Roma, occhi in Bundesliga: si punta un 2006

With the farewell of Hummels and the return of Hermoso who will not stay in Trigoria, Roma needs new faces in defense, and the management is certainly not wasting any time. Ghisolfi, the Giallorossi’s sporting director, is already at work to bring new reinforcements to Trigoria, and one of the first names on the list is that of Banks, a central defender from Augsburg class of 2006.

The Giallorossi had already tried to buy him in January, with a proposal of 7 million euros plus 1 bonus, but the offer was rejected. Nevertheless, interest in the young defender remained alive, and Banks himself said he was impressed by Roma’s offer: “When I heard about Roma’s offer, I was immediately struck by how much they cared about me.”

The boy even had a video call with coach Claudio Ranieri, who wanted to personally involve him in the project. Roma could try again in the summer, trying to land a promising young talent for the future.

Non solo Banks: si valutano due vecchi obiettivi

But that’s not all: among the defenders who could arrive at Roma are also Balerdi and Marmol. The former, an Argentine central from Marseille, was already probed by the Giallorossi in January. Despite Roma’s interest, the French club did not want to sell him, and the negotiation did not go through. But Roma could make a comeback this summer, with Marseille asking for around €20 million.

The second name is an old acquaintance: Marmol, a Spanish central defender from Las Palmas. Roma also had contacts for him in January, but eventually veered to other operations. However, the player remains a concrete option, and his cost is around 10 million euros. Ghisolfi is monitoring the situation and could accelerate to close the deal in the next market windows.

With these possible reinforcements in defense, Roma hopes to build a more solid back pack, capable of competing at the highest level and giving continuity to their successes in the league, but also younger. If the Giallorossi can perfect these strikes, there is no doubt that the team will have the potential to grow further and continue to fight for the positions that matter.

Ranieri’s team has already shown great character and determination, and with these reinforcements, it could really make the quantum leap needed to return to dominance in Europe.
