Bench and divestment: Milan purge, farewell to 4 senators

Milan is preparing for an unprecedented revolution: illustrious farewells, senators in the balance and a new cycle at the gates. Who will stay and who will pack their bags?

A few years ago they were the heroes of the Scudetto, today they are the faces of crisis. It is the mocking fate of Milan, which finds itself reckoning with a bitter season and a team that seems to have lost its edge. And when things go wrong, there is always someone who pays.

This time, in the crosshairs are not only coaches and managers, but also those players who were supposed to be the backbone of the team.

And indeed, one is already gone. Davide Calabria, the captain, packed his bags in January to move to Bologna. A choice that until a year ago would have seemed unthinkable, but today appears to be just the beginning of a much larger purge.

The impression is that regardless of how the season ends, Milan is ready to rebuild. Money is needed to rebuild, and excellent disposals could bring the necessary liquidity. Therefore, it would be no surprise to see at least three of the names mentioned leave, if not all four. But the real question is who will lead this revolution?

Because even before the players, it will be necessary to understand who will sit on the Rossoneri bench next year. A change in the bench is in the air, and the choice of the new coach will be decisive in defining the market strategy.

For sure, Milanello is ready to change its face. Today’s senators could be tomorrow’s exes. But will Milan be able to rebuild a team that lives up to its name?

Da Maignan a Leao: i 4 scudettati fra panchina e addio

If Calabria was the first sacrifice, there are other heavy names behind him. Maignan, Theo Hernandez, Tomori and Leao, all prized pieces of the 2021 Italian champion team, have ended up in the eye of the storm. And in addition to a collective sell-off this summer – monetizing to then rebuild – they could also end up resoundingly on the bench.

Let’s start with the goalkeeper. Maignan, who until recently was considered among the best goalkeepers in the world, has collected glaring errors and seems to have lost confidence. Far from being that leader who gave certainty to the defense, today he seems almost a liability. Sportiello is not a phenomenon, but if the Frenchman continues like this, the bench could become a more concrete reality than we think.

And then there is Theo Hernández, another who seems the distant relative of the devastating player of two years ago. His accelerations are less and less frequent, his defensive phase is often sloppy, and the feeling is that Milan is seriously considering his transfer. Not least because Bartesaghi and Jimenez are pawing behind him and he may soon have more space.

If there is one department where Milan has plenty, it is the center of the defense. And Tomori, who until recently was a mainstay of the team, has now slipped back in the hierarchies. Pavlovic, Thiaw and Gabbia are stealing his place, and if performances do not improve, the Englishman could be one of the excellent sacrifices in the next market window.

But the thorniest case concerns Rafael Leao. The Portuguese is the most crystalline talent on the roster, the one who – on paper – could single-handedly solve matches. The problem is that he does so too rarely. His performance has been too erratic, and the management’s patience is starting to run out.

Not least because Milan has invested in other offensive players, and cannot afford a trident in which someone strolls. Pulisic, Joao Felix and Gimenez are offering more convincing performances, and as of today, the risk of Leao also ending up on the bench is more concrete than ever.
