Damato: “Parma penalty not to be given. Missing a red to Cancellieri.”

Il responsabile del settore tecnico arbitrale ha commentato alcuni episodi controversi

Speaking at the OpenVar broadcast on DAZN, Antonio Damato, head of technical refereeing, wanted to shed light on some of the most controversial refereeing episodes of this weekend. In particular, Damato analyzed the penalty awarded to Parma in the match against Bologna, which allowed Parma to take a 1-0 lead, calling referee Abisso’s decision an error: “We have a touch of Beukema’s hand. This is not a penalty to be given as far as we are concerned. The defender’s arms are in a congruous position, they are not put in an unnatural way and also the posture he takes is quite consonant as an attitude to make opposition to what is an attacker’s shot. There is also to consider the very little distance between the two. These penalties are not to be given.”

Also much discussed over the weekend was Abisso’s decision not to draw a red card on Cancellieri, who, already cautioned, made a late intervention on the opposing player. This, too, for Damato, represents a wrong decision on the part of the match director: “Unfortunately, there was an error on the part of the referee. It was a careless foul. Cancellieri had already been cautioned, so he should have been sent off. VAR could not intervene from protocol, it remains a field error that unfortunately happened.”
