Good news for Lecce fans and the organizers of the 2026 Mediterranean Games: the project for the roofing of the Via del Mare stadium will be completed a month early. Instead of the planned 90 days, the structure will be built in just 60 days, speeding up delivery and assembly time. An innovative and sustainable projectFunded with 25 million euros as part of the second Mediterranean Games 2026 master plan, the roof will be assembled in modules outside the stadium and then transported and assembled on site. This solution could further reduce installation time, making it possible to partially cover the facility as early as the opening of the sporting event in late August 2026, with final completion post-Games.
Another advantage of the chosen assembly method is the reduction of interference with sports activities and the presence of the public, thus avoiding inconvenience to fans.
Sail-inspired design and state-of-the-art materialsThe project, developed by the winning team (Techproject srl, Mjw Structures ing. Massimo Majowiecki and Shesa srls), was officially presented to the Games commissioner, Massimo Ferrarese. Architect Eloy Suarez, of Shesa Studio, explained that the roof will feature a single ring with Pvc sails, inspired by large racing sails. The load-bearing structure will be steel, designed to be lightweight, strong and sustainable.
“The goal is to unify the image of the stadium, transforming it into a modern and harmonious facility,” Suarez said. “It is not a new stadium, but its image will change radically, making it an architectural and sporting landmark.” Timeline and next stepsCommissioner Ferrarese expressed confidence in the early delivery of the project, stressing the importance of sticking to the schedule to ensure on-time completion. By February, Sport and Health will launch the tender for the first batch of 11.3 million euros of work, financed by the first Games masterplan.
Work on the first lot, which will include the resurfacing of the playing field, will start in May, while the installation of the roof will kick off between late June and early July.
Lecce Mayor Adriana Poli Bortone also expressed satisfaction with the rapid progress of the project: “We are extremely happy with the progress made so far. The speed with which it is proceeding will allow us to move ahead of schedule and ensure a structure ready for the Games.”
