Atalanta loses Gianluca Scamacca again, and this time for a long time. The striker, who returned to the field Saturday after a long stop, suffered a major injury to his right quadriceps, with possible tendon involvement. The injury, more serious than a simple contracture, occurred immediately after his entrance against Torino, as he attempted to return to midfield after a header.
As La Gazzetta dello Sport points out, the first diagnosis shows a possible stop of at least two months, but the situation could be even more complicated. The results of the MRI scan will arrive today, but the consultation with Professor Ramon Cugat, the Nerazzurri’s reference luminary, at the Quironsalud Hospital in Barcelona will be decisive. Should surgery be necessary, the recovery time would lengthen to four months, with the real possibility that Scamacca’s season is already over.
This would be a real mockery, considering that the player had perfectly respected the recovery path after his cruciate rupture and seemed ready to contribute. Yet another tegola for Gasperini, who already has to do without Scalvini and Kossounou for long periods, in addition to managing other important absences.
Quali soluzioni per l’attacco?
Scamacca’s injury increases the responsibilities of Mateo Retegui, who is called to overtime in the central forward role. Monza had asked Vanja Vlahovic, the only other center forward in the squad, on loan, but Atalanta decided to keep him precisely in light of the emergency.
To complete the department, Gasperini could adapt De Ketelaere or Pasalic as an offensive reference in some game situations. Another option could be Daniel Maldini, although the new signing is more of a second forward. The former Monza man will make his debut in a Nerazzurri jersey as early as tomorrow in the Coppa Italia against Bologna, but it is not yet known with which number, as 14 has been retired in memory of Chicco Pisani.
If a last-minute hit from the market does not come in the next few hours, Gasperini will have to find internal solutions to make up for this new heavy absence.
