Saturday night of ultras violence in Udine, where a group of Udinese fans, flanked by allies from Salzburg, stormed a train near Basiliano station. The target was the Venice fans, who were present en masse in the convoy following clashes in the first leg match last October.
According to reconstructions, the group of about 50 hooded ultras, armed with batons and batons, attempted to stop the train by lighting fires on the tracks. The convoy, which left Udine at 6:09 p.m., carried about 300 Venice fans in the first cars and another 130 travelers in the next cars. Tensions were already high from the stadium, where there had been smoke throwing and mutual provocation, aggravated by an offensive banner displayed by Venetian fans.
The train, which was stuck for over an hour, did not leave until 7:24 p.m. for Venice. The toll of the clashes was two seriously injured, one Venetian and one Austrian fan, both of whom were rushed to hospital but out of danger. Seven other fans, five from Salzburg and two from Udinese, suffered bruises but refused hospitalization. Also injured were two police officers who intervened to quell the clashes.
Law enforcement officials have launched investigations to identify those responsible for the attack and reconstruct in detail the dynamics of the events.
