A pity. Because overcoming Palladino’s Fiorentina, a faded copy of the jaw-dropping team of late 2024, would have meant taking a big step forward in the race for the 2025/2026 Champions League, given also Juventus’ defeat and Bologna’s draw.
And, instead, Lazio makes mistakes. Perhaps because of overconfidence, perhaps because of a bad night, perhaps because of some somewhat risky choices made by its leader, Baroni.
Fiorentina , bestia nera?
Complicating matters was the opponent: Fiorentina really seems to be Lazio’s black beast: there have been three consecutive defeats against the Viola, all by 2-1 scores. What punished the biancocelesti, in round number twenty-two of the 2024/25 Serie A, was a decidedly less ardent approach to the match than their opponents, who went 0-2 up in the first quarter of an hour.
Baroni, scelte sbagliate?
Could a few mistakes by the coach have complicated Lazio’s plans? Perhaps yes, especially the exclusion of Rovella. The midfield with Dele-Bashiru alongside Guendouzi left too much space for Fiorentina. Considering that the former Juventus midfielder will be disqualified in the Europa League, the choice of the bench seems really risky. Daughter, perhaps, of an overly offensive reading of a match that proved far more complicated than expected.
Calo fisiologico?
Was Lazio playing above its means? Probably. Just as it is acceptable and almost inevitable for a team to slow down. The biancocelesti’s momentum has been frenzied, and, partly because of a probable preparation recall, it is not unthinkable that the team would slow down. The important thing, however, is to start running again.
