A treble against a big one to set the tone

Scoring points against the big boys is often considered a bonus in the race for salvation: unexpected results that can make all the difference at the end of the season. On Sunday afternoon Lecce will face Simone Inzaghi’s Inter Milan, a team that has lost only the derby against AC Milan in the league. A prohibitive challenge on paper, but one that Giallorossi fans hope will deliver a surprise.

This season, Lecce has only managed to stop Juventus, drawing at home thanks to a goal in the final by Ante Rebic. In recent years, however, the Giallorossi have often scored valuable points against the big boys. Under Marco Baroni’s leadership, for example, the team has earned an impressive 14 points in eight matches against the big boys: two wins against Atalanta (both home and away) and a success against Lazio at the Via del Mare.
Last season, under Roberto D’Aversa first and Luca Gotti later, the performance was less brilliant: a single win against Fiorentina in a comeback, thanks to Patrick Dorgu’s first Serie A goal. Added to this were four draws against Lazio, Napoli (at the Maradona Stadium), Fiorentina and Milan. Precisely against the Rossoneri, Lecce had come close to a resounding victory with a spectacular goal by Roberto Piccoli from midfield in the dying minutes, which was later nullified by VAR.

In this championship, Lecce has collected only one point against the big ones, and the match against Inter represents an important opportunity. Not only to redeem the ugly defeat suffered against Cagliari, but also to win crucial points in the salvation race. A positive result against the Nerazzurri would be crucial for the morale of the team, currently engaged in a tough fight to stay in Serie A.

Lecce’s last smile against Inter Milan dates back to January 29, 2012, when Serse Cosmi was on the bench. That victory is still vivid in the fans’ memories and could inspire the Giallorossi to seek a new historic result.

On Sunday afternoon, the Via del Mare will be the scene of a seemingly impossible challenge, but one that could provide unexpected thrills. With the support of its fans and the desire to redeem itself, Lecce hopes to add another memorable chapter to its history against the big boys.
